Drinking tea and sharing my favorite fictional women

We meet again! Happy spring semester everyone. It certainly doesn’t feel like the beginning of a new academic term, and I’m not ready to start doing work again. All I want to do is binge-watch movies and T.V. shows while sitting in my bed and drinking tea. Over the break while I was watching too much Netflix, I was mentally compiling a list of female characters that I think are, for lack of better terms, awesome. I also rediscovered my love for tea (I’m drinking it right now as I write this column)! So, grab a cup of tea while I go through some of my favorite fictional ladies I found while watching endless T.V. shows and movies.

I want to start off with one of my newly discovered main characters that has made an impact on me. Brenda Leigh Johnson played by Kyra Sedgwick from the show The Closer is an absolute girl boss. She leads a team of detectives in solving homicide cases for the Los Angeles Police Department, and she looks good while doing it! This doesn’t just include her looks — she’s strong, well-spoken, and brilliant. Her intelligence while solving cases shines through and it amazes me. If you haven’t, definitely check the show out and see Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson do her thing.

What would this article be without mentioning the one and only Elle Woods? Elle Woods, the main character of the movie Legally Blonde played by Reese Witherspoon, is more than just a pretty face. The movie begins with Elle going to Harvard only to impress her ex-boyfriend, but her character development is impeccable. She progresses into a great student without losing her love for pink and unique spunk. When I grow up, I aspire to be Elle Woods and emulate her drive, enthusiasm, and style.

If you’ve ever skimmed through any of my pieces before, you can probably tell I enjoy watching anime. Mitsuha Miyamizu from the movie Your Name is a character that I think is widely overlooked. Mitsuha is caring, adventurous, and dynamic. One of my favorite lines from her is, “I can’t stand this small town anymore. It’s too small and close-knit. I want to graduate and go to Tokyo!” She yearns for something more, always looking to better herself and expand her horizons. In my own life, I am always looking to get out of my comfort zone and try new things, just like Mitsuha!

The last woman I would like to mention is Donna Sheridan played by Meryl Streep from the movie Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia has been my favorite movie for as long as I can remember. I love the music, the characters, and the gorgeous setting. But, it wasn’t until I matured that I  realized how much of an inspiration Donna really is. Donna raised her daughter, Sophie, all on her own while running a successful hotel in Greece. She made the decision not to find out who Sophie’s father is, and I think that’s pretty cool. Donna is funny, hardworking, and loyal to her friends — I think everyone can learn something from Donna Sheridan.

As I finish this cup of tea and this column, I urge you to explore these characters and think deeper on what you can learn from them. To me, they’re inspirational, funny, hardworking, and intelligent. To whoever is reading, good luck with this semester and I hope you can rediscover your love for something, just like I did!
