Redefining leadership

Wow. The past week has definitely been a whirlwind, to say the least. I’ve spent a great deal of time just familiarizing myself with the role of Editor, sifting through emails, and just digesting what I’ve undertaken. But like I said in my last piece, I’m beyond excited to be in this role and am excited for what’s ahead for The Stute.

I’ve always considered myself to be a (sort of) leader. There are definitely instances where I enjoy taking control and delegating tasks to a group. But there are also times when I’d rather sit back and have tasks delegated to me. The only qualm with being a leader is that you assume the obligation and responsibility for the whole group. In most situations, being a leader of an organization can feel isolating — every member in the organization looks up to you in some sense. Being the new Editor, I expected the feeling of isolation to set in immediately, but strangely it hasn’t yet. And I don’t think it ever will.

The Stute is unlike any other organization I’ve been a part of before. The newspaper is like a living, breathing organism that’s constantly changing, growing, learning, and creating. There are so many roles and so many people, it’s almost impossible for me to feel isolated in any sense. Plus, I’m surrounded by a star-studded team of individuals who are miraculous at their jobs and also people I’m glad to call my friends. This is why I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the lovely members of the 2022-2023 Stute E-board.

Jordyn, our Business Manager (bus-man for short): Jordyn is in charge of dealing with everything business related for The Stute. In her one year as bus-man, she has quickly learned the ins and outs of all things business and has done a phenomenal job with securing sponsors, navigating our finances, and planning Stute events.

Keenan, our Managing Editor: Keenan, the previous Layout Editor, is a go-getter. She’s proactive with her job, has very creative ideas, and has a great work ethic, so I have no doubt that she will be an excellent Managing Editor.

Isabella, our Layout Editor: While Isabella is somewhat of a newcomer to The Stute, she has quickly been absorbed into the Stute family. In her short term so far, she has quickly learned about the process of laying out the newspaper (which, anyone will tell you, is no small feat).

Zane, our Secretary: Zane is the backbone of our organization, making sure that our conference rooms are booked. He also helps with tracking contributions to our paper and creates the newsletters that appear in inboxes every Friday and Tuesday.

Katie, our Outreach Chair: In her short time at The Stute, Katie has contacted many Hoboken businesses and acquired partnerships with them. She’s definitely a visionary when it comes to outreach, and I’m excited to work on outreach projects with her for this upcoming year!

Bemin, our Digital Manager: Bemin has completely revolutionized The Stute’s social media platforms. He has done excellent work with creating social media posts about our issues, gaining a large following on The Stute Instagram, and continuing to help transfer our articles to our website.

There’s much more I could say about my teammates, but the hope is that you now have a small glimpse into the folks who work at The Stute (and an understanding of how grateful I am to be working with such a wonderful group of people).

While the E-board is important for The Stute to function, we aren’t the only ones putting in the hard work. Everyone—from our minor board members, to our staff writers, to photographers, to copy editors—is an integral part of our community. We hope you continue to enjoy the hard work we put in every week for The Stute.
