Student Government plans election process of President and Vice President of Operations

Currently, the Student Government Association is in the beginning phases of electing a new President and Vice President of Operations (VPO). Normally, elections would have happened last fall semester, but due to restructuring efforts and the writing of a new constitution that failed to pass, they were pushed back until now.

On March 5, declarations of intent to run for the presidential positions ended. There are two pairs of candidates that are running in this selection — Aleksandar Dimoski and Matthew Brantl are running for President and VPO, respectively as one pair, and well as Liana Meyer and Julieann Murphy who are also running for President and VPO, respectively.

At the time of this publication, an ongoing nomination period is taking place in which candidate pairs need to collect signatures from at least 5% of the student body in support of their nomination. The Google Form to show give a signature for candidates can be found here. After this period finishes, a campaigning period and debate will then ensue, and the election will conclude with a final vote. The entire process will be completely virtual and will continue to use Google Forms to collect votes from the student body.

On March 12 at midnight, nominations will close and the rest of the election process will follow this timeline:

  • March 13 @12 am toMarch 25 @ 11:59 pm – Campaigning period
  • March 15 to March 19 – Debate period and verification of candidates
  • March 26 @12 am to April 1 @11:59 pm – Voting period
  • April 4 – Winners announced at Senate meeting
  • April 5 – First day of new Cabinet

*Due to Easter, the final two events on the timeline will have their dates switched; the new dates are not yet known, but should not change more than a day from the original timeline.

Gabriella Poska, current SGA Secretary, explained that “All current senators and committee heads, as well as the Diversity & Inclusion Committee aboard will remain intact after the upcoming election. As usual, the student body will elect a President and Vice President of Operations, who will then fill their Cabinet with a Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Student Interests, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Secretary.”

Looking into the future, the SGA plans to continue working on their restructuring plans before proposing them again to the student body. Poska stated, “Most of [the] initiatives are related to the virtual environment we’re currently in and we’re always looking for more ideas on how to make things better so we urge anyone with any questions or concerns to reach out to any of their SGA pals!”
