Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

“Spider-Man” is no unfamiliar name: after six live action blockbuster movies and more to come, it can be easy to feel numb to any more Spider-Man-related stories. But before you think “it’s just another Spider-Man movie,” hear me out: you’ve never seen a Spider-Man movie nor a superhero movie quite like this. I know, I know, there has been an overabundance of superhero movies and television shows in the last 20 years, but don’t worry, you don’t have to “catch up” before watching this one. For you comic book fans out there, it’ll be rewarding for you to see the niche, lesser-known Spider-Man comic book storylines unfold on the big screen. Sure, you may already be groaning at the thought of having to sit through yet another Spider-Man origin story, but Into the Spider-Verse tells you more than a handful of different Spider-Man origin stories you probably have never heard of or seen before.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse mainly follows Miles Morales, a personable and intelligent teenager from Brooklyn as he tries to fit into a new private school. After spray painting an abandoned subway tunnel, Miles is bitten by a peculiar-looking spider, and when he returns to the tunnel the next day, he runs into Spider-Man trying to stop Kingpin from revving up a “Super Collider.” Spider-Man realizes that Miles and him share Spidey Senses and tells Miles to hide just before Kingpin kills Spider-Man and turns on the machine. Eventually, as Miles is adjusting to his powers, he encounters Peter B. Parker, a Spider-Man from an alternate universe who was pulled into Miles’ universe as a result of the Super Collider. The duo eventually cross paths with Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Noir, and Peni Parker — all Spider-People from their own universes who must join forces to defeat Kingpin. This fun-loving band of Spider-People, along with the array of familiar villains (Kingpin, Green Goblin, Prowler, Doc Ock, Tombstone, and Scorpion) and stellar cast (Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoe Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn, Liev Schreiber, Chris Pine, and Natalie Morales), makes for a non-stop entertaining experience.

The combination of many enjoyable twists, captivating visual effects, humor, comic book aesthetic, soundtrack, cinematography, performance, and and narrative explains its immense success and Oscar nomination (Animated Feature Film). With its PG rating and heartwarming message that anyone can be Spider-Man, it’s an amazing movie to bring kids to. Don’t let its rating fool you though, this isn’t just some “kids’ movie” you might be used to. There’s something for everyone in this movie, so bring everyone you talk to to the closest theater and enjoy.
