Passing the torch

As I work on my last issue of The Stute as Editor-in-Chief, I can’t help but reminisce about all of the stories I’ve witnessed over the years. From the selection of its new logo to the inauguration of its seventh president, Stevens has undergone many significant changes during my time here. There have been campus upgrades, administration shuffles, hurricanes, record-breaking donations, high-profile campus visitors, and many more milestones. I’m proud to be able to say that I contributed to our coverage of these events for the Stevens community of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

What I’ll remember most, however, is not the headline or the front page. It’s not the words in the articles, the pictures on the page, or the jokes in the “rabbit ears”. Rather, it’s the names in the staff box – the people.

I joined this organization as a freshman because I was looking for a way to utilize my creative interests, initially photography which later turned into layout. But I stayed here because I really enjoyed working as a part of this team.

From the first time I stepped into the office to today, I can attest that The Stute would be nothing without the dedicated members of its staff. Creating and collaborating on a weekly basis with this diverse group of people has been a great adventure. Through the ups and downs and despite the frustrations and disagreements, those I’ve worked with have made it all worth it. Bonding with this dysfunctional family and creating something larger than ourselves is something I wouldn’t hesitate to choose again. To all those who I worked with on a weekly basis over the years, thank you for making this journey so rewarding. Thursdays will never be the same.

Having the opportunity to serve on the executive board for four years gave me tons of experience and allowed me to grow in ways I never expected. As I watched my peers move on, I challenged myself and took on more roles than I’d ever imagined I would. I not only became versed in all the aspects of running a newspaper, but also learned about myself as both a leader and a person. For all that I’ve put into The Stute, it’s given me just as much in return.

After guiding The Stute in several different capacities, it is time now for me to pass the torch just as it was passed to me one year ago. I am so grateful for having had the chance to lead this organization through one of the 110 years of its legacy. I am proud of the accomplishments I’ve helped us achieve and the impact I’ve made during my time here. I am confident that those I leave behind are capable of taking The Stute to even greater heights, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for both myself and this organization.
