SAVE recently volunteered to pair up with the Hoboken Green Team, one of the largest local initiatives, to work on improving our community’s environmental issues.
SAVE (Student Against Violating the Earth) is campus’s environmental club; they strive to make Stevens greener and more sustainable. The Hoboken Green Team consists of volunteers who meet monthly to resolve environmental issues that concern the local community.
Because of the Green Team’s efforts, Hoboken was awarded bronze level of the Sustainable Jersey certification in both 2014 and 2011. The Sustainable Jersey certification is a prestigious accreditation for municipalities in New Jersey recognized by the state government.
SAVE volunteers attended the last two Green Team meetings, where important programs were discussed – like the Plastic Bag Reduction Program, Hoboken Green Business Recognition Program, and Hoboken Harvest. At the same time, a possible collaboration with SAVE for joint initiatives was discussed.
“We’ve worked with them in the past for smaller collaborations like park clean ups, but this year I’m definitely hoping to do much more,” said Anthony Rusignuolo, Vice President of SAVE, and also the President of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW). “I’m hoping to have SAVE and ESW work with them [the Green Team] to develop an education outreach curriculum for grade schoolers that’s focused on sustainability in the STEM field, as well as have greater collaboration on Stevens’s annual Earth Week festivities to attract more people to campus.”
Earth Week is an annual event in April, full of fun team events that aim to instill sustainable culture in all Stevens students, faculty and staff. Spring 2017 will be the fourth annual Earth Week celebration at Stevens.
In addition to these plans, there have also been talks about organizing panel debates on topics like recycling and composting in the future, to further promote sustainability.
