Lambda Upsilon Lambda hosted Stevens’ first Epic Rap Battle last Wednesday in Hayden Lounge. The event was led by Joshua Negron who emceed throughout the night as various performers took the stage in character to engage in rap battles.
Participant David Estrada explained his role in the event, and the overall structure. “My character in the rap battle was the celebrity astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. I went up against Kevin Quigley as Albert Einstein. There were three judges who decided the winner of each rap battle.” Other performers included Andy Wiggins as a calculator and Hart Welles as the Periodic Table.
“Albert Einstein won the first rap battle against me and Andy Wiggins won against Hart Welles. The audience then voted between Kevin Quigley and Andy Wiggins for best overall rapper… [they] chose Andy Wiggins as their favorite, and the judges awarded other [performers], such as most creative, and funniest rappers,” Estrada said.
Estrada also described the preparation process. “Everybody who signed up for the event paired up, and we decided the characters and wrote our own raps together. We also could have made our own beat, but Kevin and I just found one that we liked on YouTube. It was a lot of fun coming up with puns and jokes to put into the rap.”
As a whole, Estrada considers the event a success. “I would definitely do this again, Lambda Upsilon Lambda has found an annual event that is fun, humorous, and recognizable. Joshua Negron and the rest of the brothers put together a great show that I’m sure will grow to become an event that everybody on campus can look forward to every year.”
Audience members also seemed to enjoy themselves. “I thought it was a lot of fun to see people performing their own raps and have such an entertaining performance with all of the clever lyrics and high energy,” said attendee Chris Fitzgerald.
When asked who his favorite performer was, attendee Zachary Kastner said, “As a lover of mathematics, I have to say I loved Andy Wiggin’s Calculator.”
“I would definitely go to another one,” said Fitzgerald.
