Chinese Student Association hosts Dim Sum Night

The Chinese Student Association hosted Dim Sum Night on Wednesday in the Babbio Atrium at 9 PM. The event brought many students out to enjoy various dishes in traditional dim sum fashion.

“Dim sum is a very traditional Chinese way of eating,” said newly elected CSA President Jason Wong. “Typically we host more contemporary events like Dumpling Night, but we don’t have very many cultural events, so we thought it would be good if we could bring a more cultural Chinese event to Stevens with a very unique twist to it.”

Wong explained how dim sum dining works. “People are seated, and we push around a cart, and people get to choose what they want to eat from the cart, so it’s a little bit different than your typical grab-and-go event.”

Wong also pointed out some of the foods the CSA prepared for students to enjoy. “We have some Americanized food like spring rolls and dumplings, but we also have steamed shrimp bonnets, soup dumplings, and rice rolls. So these are more traditional and you wouldn’t really see them in takeout places.”

Usually the CSA gets food from local Chinese food establishments, but they decided to do something different for this event. “We got these [foods] from Chinatown. We contacted a number of dim sum places… [this food is from] a place called Nom Wah Tea Parlor. They serve primarily dim sum, and they cater. Normally, we get our food from Yeung II in Hoboken, but they don’t really have an array of more traditional dishes; they have more Americanized Chinese foods,” said Wong. “My favorite food, out of these, would probably be the rice rolls with fried dough inside. They go together nicely with a sweet soy sauce.”

For students interested in joining the CSA, email works best. “They can email us at csa@stevens.edu, and we’ll put them on our mailing list, and they’ll be notified of all of our upcoming events,” said Wong.
