New Division of University Relations formed

On November 3, an email was sent by President Farvardin announcing the new Division of University Relations. Effective November 9 of this year, the Division of Communications and Marketing (DCM) and the Division of Government and Community Relations (DGCR) have been reorganized into this new division, in an effort to “enhance Stevens’ marketing and communications efforts.”

The decision to consolidate the DCM and DGCR was based on an evaluation of the available resources Stevens dedicates to communications and marketing, and specifically how those resources are distributed. President Farvardin noted that “The planned retirement of Vice President Ed Stukane on November 6th” presented an opportunity to rethink the divisions. Specific revisions of the distribution of resources include staff and budgets within the Division of Academic Affairs, and various other marketing and communications activities such as Stevens’ Pre-College Program.

President Farvardin indicated that part of the process of reorganizing these divisions was soliciting input from the Provost, key Board of Trustees members, Vice Presidents, and other administrators “who utilize the services of the DCM.” Responses from these representatives included how efforts at building Stevens’ reputation has increased, but coordination of activities can sometimes be uneven and unclear.

The new Division of University Relations is set to oversee “university communications and marketing; campus communications; government relations; community relations; and corporate relations.” The division will be led by Beth McGrath, who will be retaining her role as Vice President for Government and Community Relations / Chief of Staff for the President’s Cabinet.

As President Farvardin noted, the reorganization is an opportunity for stronger coordination between both campus and external communications and the knowledge base within the Office of the President. A pivotal focus will be placed on fostering stronger coordination and collaboration with the various divisions that engage with the community.
