The Curriculum Review Task Force is conducting a periodic review of the (SES) curriculum, focused on the engineering curriculum.
The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is responsible for accrediting the engineering programs at Stevens. “ABET requires us to have a process in place to review, and update as appropriate, the curricula and courses of all our engineering programs,” said Keith Sheppard, Chair of the Curriculum Review Task Force. Sheppard noted that this included the core curriculum across all engineering disciplines.
Every six years, ABET conducts an onsite accreditation review to ensure that Stevens is keeping its engineering programs aligned with ABET’s target educational outcomes. “These objectives and outcomes are also required to be reviewed periodically with our stakeholders,” said Sheppard.
Sheppard leads this Curriculum Review Task Force. “The Task Force has been taking input from our stakeholders, is benchmarking other schools, and [is] considering the landscape of how engineering and science education is evolving,” said Sheppard. Based upon these recommendations, Stevens will align programs to meet the needs of major employers of Stevens graduates.
However, this is not the only way programs are reviewed. “Each engineering program at Stevens has their own external advisory board, as does the School of Engineering & Science, and these boards are a key resource to provide input to the review of objectives and outcomes as well as how they are met by the curricula,” said Sheppard.
Once school-wide curricula changes are proposed, they are then reviewed by an institution-wide curriculum committee. At this level, information about cross-school impacts are emphasized.
