The Department of Information Technology has made the transition from Google to Microsoft as the email provider at Stevens. Instead of receiving access to the Google Suite, all new students will receive free access to Office 365. Stevens is joining several other universities including University of Chicago, Harvard University, and Duke University that use the Office 365 Email System.
The Office 365 Email System boasts numerous additional features compared to the Google Suite. Office 365 has an email inbox of 50 GB, larger than the 15 GB provided by Google. In addition, all students will be given access to Office 365, which includes programs such as Microsoft Office and Excel, for use online and on up to five devices. Office 365 also has stronger security features, malware protection, and spam protection than Gmail.
Office 365 Email also has usability benefits over Gmail including the ability to tag others in the body of the email, automatic creation of events, and an easier interface to attach files.
Though the Department of Information Technology is supporting the transition to Office 365, current students do not have to make the switch. Current students will not lose their access to the Google Suite. All future students, however, will not have access to the Google Suite and must use Office 365.
