Stevens’ Fencing takes on the NCAA Regional Championship

The Stevens women’s and men’s fencing teams competed at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships on Saturday, March 7. The teams faced Division One and Division Three Programs, including competition from the University of North Carolina, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and NJIT.

In men’s fencing, sabre second-years Spencer Depew and Chinli Ong both competed to move into the second round. In Pool 1, Depew had a 5-1 record. He took down saberists from Drew, Haverford, Princeton, and Penn State. In the second round, Depew was bested after scoring 12 touches. Ong moved through the first round after defeating saberists from Wagner and Haverford, but was eliminated in round two after scoring five touches.

Third-year epeeist Riley Parker had a strong showing as well, leading his first pool with a 4-1 tally. However, in the second pool, he was unable to advance despite scoring 12 touches. First-year Skanda Krishnan and Donovan Aggeler added two wins at epee, with Krishnan becoming the winner of Pool 3 in the first round.

In foil, senior Nick Reznick and second-year Dev Badlani earned many victories for foil in the first round, knocking out opponents from NJIT, Penn State, and Wagner.

The women’s team had an impressive day. In epee, juniors Grace Hicks and Sofia Stoeckel both moved through round one with a 3-3 record. They advanced to the second round, where they each tallied one win but failed to move to round three.

In sabre, third-year Sasha Craine failed to advance to the second round by just one touch. She collected three victories, however, over Penn State, Drew, and Haverford. Second-year foilist Julia DiPaolo just missed advancing to the second round.

Both teams fought well in this year’s Championships. The Ducks move towards off-season training to come back even stronger next winter.
