Stevens sports conclude victorious fall seasons

After a year of uncertainty and many COVID-19 restrictions, the Ducks are bringing the fall sports season to a close with many victories. The Stevens Women’s Field Hockey team and the Women’s Volleyball team both earned the Middle Atlantic Conference title. The Men’s Soccer Team and the Women’s Soccer team both had victories in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Tournament.

On November 3, Women’s Field Hockey won their first MAC Freedom title after joining the conference in 2019. Stevens was the top seed and defeated second seed Misericordia University with a final score of 2-0. Fifth-year Brynn Froehlich and senior Kila Eadie both scored in the first half of the game. In the end, Stevens concluded with a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Stevens managed to hold the first three quarters without any shots on goal from Misericordia. The victory marked the team’s first conference title since 2015.

The win secured a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. On November 10, Stevens was defeated by the hosting team, Messiah University.

The Stevens Women’s Volleyball team won their second consecutive MAC Freedom Title, following their win in 2019 (the tournament was not held in 2020 due to COVID). On November 6, Stevens defeated the home team DeSales University in a 3-1 game. The 25-22, 25-14, 25-27, 25-19 victory came after the Duck’s only conference loss to DeSales on October 26. Senior Elizabeth Chu was awarded MAC Freedom Tournament MVP honors. Stevens had both offensive and defensive advantages, with nine aces over DeSales’ five, and 10 blocks compared to five from their opponent.

This win advanced Stevens to the NCAA tournament, where the Ducks lost 3-1 to Middlebury College.

The Men’s Soccer team defeated Swarthmore College on November 13 at Tufts University’s Bello Field in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. After 89 minutes without scoring, senior Jay Poskitt scored the only goal of the game. The game concluded with 11 shots on goal from Stevens and six from Swarthmore.

Stevens’ NCAA run concluded after a loss to defending national champion Tufts University. After a 1-1 game and a scoreless overtime, the Ducks were defeated in penalty kicks ending 11-10.

On November 13, the Women’s Soccer team also had a victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This was the team’s 13th appearance at the NCAA Tournament.
