Accessorizing in autumn

Now that we are officially in the swing of the fall season, we likely have our major wardrobe pieces established. My focus has slightly shifted to determine what accessories I need to work into my outfits this season to enhance my style. The fun thing about the temperatures dropping is getting the opportunity to layer! Scarves, hats, and sweaters are some of my favorite fall accessories. Some styles have proved to be more popular than others this season.

Before it gets frigid and freezing outside where a heavily wrapped scarf is an absolute necessity, a light patterned scarf is the perfect way to elevate your outfit. In the summer I tend to wear silky neck scarves around the top of my head for a beachy look. In the fall though, I choose to wear these scarves as more of a headband, where I actually tie the knot underneath my hair and have it hold my hair back. This look helps take a simple outfit above and beyond into something much more stylish!

I added this multi patterned headscarf to a solid-colored outfit to add a chic dynamic. Fun fact: the headscarf was part of a Halloween costume from last year!

In addition to scarves as headwear, who else can’t resist a good ole hat? In warmer weather, I often wear baseball caps or the recently trendy bucket hats. Fuzzy Sherpa bucket hats or another insulating material are carrying the trend into autumn. Adding a fuzzy bucket hat to any simple fall look will take your outfits from good to great. Something about the shape and fit of a simple bucket hat proves to be popular lately and I am here for it. Throughout the summer I did not hesitate to replace a typical baseball cap with a bucket hat for a beach day, and this fall I am on the hunt for the perfect textured bucket hat to keep me cozy and stylish all fall long!

This cozy faux Sherpa bucket hat is for sale at Hoboken local boutique, Brooke+Bel, it is a perfect fall accessory!

Another trendy way to stay warm as it gets chillier outside is of course sweaters and cardigans. While these are in fact a staple clothing piece in the fall, they can act as a trendy accessory as well. When not wearing your cardigan or sweater in the traditional way, you can make it chic by simply draping it over your shoulders and tying the sleeves around your chest. Pair these over a tank or simple blouse to up your outfits. I tried out this style for myself and loved the way such a simple and practical tactic elevated my outfit to such a chic status.

Another look at this outfit I wore over the weekend where I paired this green sweater with a matching black tank & pants set to add some color. Tied around my shoulders for a cozy feel and chic look!

Lastly, a key accessory in any season is a staple purse or handbag. I have been alternating between a small, long chained purse for days when I do not need to carry a lot around. On the contrary, I have been relying heavily on a canvas tote as my day-to-day bag. I bring my tote with me just about everywhere and throw just about everything in it! As a student, these bags are increasingly popular over your typical backpack for classes and errands. Both types of bags serve their purpose in both style and practicality which is why I think both are necessary for the fall months.

While my tote is not pictured, here is how I styled my small, long chain bag with a simple fall outfit, jeans and a cozy flannel. This little bag is my go to when I don’t have much to carry!
