Last year’s virtual commencement ceremony was held on October 18, 2020. Commencement planning usually takes several months, and last year’s planning reportedly started in July of the previous year.
Right now, there seems to be no plans for the class of 2021’s ceremony.
According to David Zimmerman, Executive Director of University Events, there isn’t any new information with regard to senior commencement ceremonies at this time. Zimmerman mentioned that due to New Jersey’s current restrictions limiting indoor and outdoor activity to 10 and 25 people, respectively, there are currently no plans to host large events for the graduating class. However, the office is “investigating all potential options” for the near future and actively updating their website and will continue sending out email updates to the student body.
The Senior Week Committee, run by Student Life and Alumni Engagement Offices have connected with the Office of University Events in previous years. Events hosted by graduating seniors include the 100 days celebration that starts 100 days before graduation.
Ria Salvacion, a Quantitative Finance senior who serves on the Senior Week committee expressed her thoughts that “Stevens [administration] has done a good job of keeping all their students in the loop, regarding COVID-19 policies and other events on campus.” She adds that her “overall feelings as a senior is that it’s very bittersweet knowing that [her] senior year won’t be as [she] imagined it to be. However, [she’s] still grateful that [she’s] going to graduate even if it might be unconventional.”
David Smolyak, a Finance senior shared similar sentiments, remarking that his “professors have all been super accommodating” and that he feels “a bit of every emotion with this being [his] last semester.” He elaborated, “Bittersweet with graduation coming up so soon but, excited for what’s to come in the future.”
