On September 15 an email announcement from President Nariman Farvardin was sent to all students, faculty, and staff, stating Provost Christophe Pierre’s decision to step down at the end of his five-year term, which will conclude August 2021.

First appointed in August 2016 as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost Pierre has made many contributions to Stevens, including planning initiatives, spearheading projects, and advancing research.

Students have been given the opportunity to work with Provost Pierre, specifically students involved in the Student Government Association (SGA). Samantha Molla, President of the SGA, and Anthony Tesori, Vice President of Academic Affairs, regularly communicated with Provost Pierre – monthly meetings and communication over email made it possible to discuss academic issues and goals Molla and Tesori wanted to address.

Molla and Tesori worked to extend academic break, create advisory boards for every school and department within the Shaefer School of Engineering and Sciences, and make finals three hours long instead of four hours. However, Molla urged that these are only a few of the many initiatives that the SGA worked on with Provost Pierre. Additionally, Molla expressed, “When we received the email from President Farvardin this week that Pierre would be resigning it honestly broke my heart a little. I think that he has an amazing team and I have always had very positive interactions with him and know I can rely on him and his colleagues … My only hope is that the SGA will be included in the search committee for his successor.”

President Farvardin will update the Stevens community in the coming weeks concerning the timeline in forming a search committee to appoint Provost Pierre’s successor.
