Let’s (not) go to the movies

SPOILER ALERT: Movie theaters are closed… but movies are now playing

Staying at home has made me realize how much I love going to the movies. The experience of going out just to sit in a dark room for a few hours and watch a movie may not appeal to everyone, but it does to me. Movies in theaters have a different feeling. Whether it be the oversized popcorn, or the atmosphere of other people, I miss the theater greatly. It’s where I’ve made so many great memories over the years, and fostered an idolization of an art form I love.

That being said, I’ve realized now how fortunate we are for online streaming services and television. Movies are now more accessible than ever, and many companies are now releasing the movies that were scheduled to be on the big screen. And with all the time on our hands, there are so many movies out there to watch.

Whether it be on Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, or other streaming services, there are so many new releases that I’m excited to watch. Some movie companies are even streaming old classics for free. When we went into social distancing, I was bummed that I couldn’t see Onward, the new Disney Pixar film, in theaters. But now it’s on my screen from the comfort of my home!

The other thing movies bring is connection. My friends and I often go to the movies together and discuss the film together after. This aspect is very important to me, and social isolation prevents me from physically hanging out with my friends.

But again, the connections are still there, albeit virtually. Throwing a Netflix party or streaming a movie together on Discord are just some of the ways I combat not being able to hang out with my friends in person. It’s a lot of fun just to know someone is also there.

Overall, it is a great time for movies. Though the traditional medium is shut down, the digital side is booming. Hopefully, we can share some of what we’ve watched on the other side of the screen. Movies are chances to fantasize and escape reality, which many of us need right now, given the harsh one we live in. So let’s all stay in, and watch a movie together.
