The threat of novel coronavirus suspends all summer study abroad programs

Two days ago, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Christophe Pierre announced in a campus-wide email that the evolving situation with the novel coronavirus, which causes the disease known as COVID-19, has led Stevens to suspend all summer study abroad programs. Students who are currently studying abroad have the option to return to campus or stay in their current location. This change is the latest caused by the novel coronavirus.

Second-year student Melissa Kosar, who is studying abroad in an exchange program in Strasbourg, France, is among students who are abroad and affected by the novel coronavirus. But despite the threat of novel coronavirus, she is “not very worried” about the disease.

“I am not very worried about the [novel] coronavirus,” she said in an interview. “It is a little frightening being in one of the worst countries in Europe right now as far as number of cases. But it hasn’t majorly affected my day to day routine. It is however concerning that I might face issues when traveling to other countries and crossing borders. It won’t stop me from traveling but it is definitely another thing I need to be very cautious of. As far as health, I’m obviously washing my hands all the time, carrying hand sanitizer, and avoiding anyone who feels ill. Otherwise, it isn’t a huge concern — just something to keep in mind.”
