Men’s basketball defeats Delaware Valley 77-54 over weekend

This past weekend on Saturday, February 1, the Stevens men’s basketball team trekked all the way down to Doylestown, Pennsylvania, to face off against the Delaware Valley University Aggies. Coming off a close win against FDU-Florham (80-69) a few days before, the Ducks had high energy and confidence going into their game against the Aggies.

The Aggies are no stranger to the Ducks. Having narrowly beaten them at the start of the season 85-73, the Ducks knew going into this game that it could be a tough one. The Ducks had an amazing record of 14-4 at this point, and they wanted to keep it that way. They were not going to lose to a team that they had already beaten and had experience playing.

The first few minutes of the game saw the Ducks and Aggies neck-in-neck. The Ducks did not get off to the best of starts, and after missing a layup to start off the game, it seemed as if the Aggies had a counter for every move that the Ducks threw at them. Luckily, the Aggies’ lead did not last long, and soon enough, any notion the Aggies had of winning had vanished. After the first seven-and-a-half minutes, the Ducks managed to gain a 10-point lead over the Aggies. Things were looking bleak for the Aggies.

Once the Ducks picked up their momentum, it was easy sailing from there. After two pairs of free throws by seniors Spencer Cook and Dylan Walsh, the game was effectively decided. For the remainder of the game, the Ducks were never trailing the Aggies. At the end of the first half, the Ducks lead the Aggies 34 to 29. The Ducks were plowing ahead at full-tilt, and nothing could stop them.

The Ducks did not slow down at all after the first half. Junior Alec DiPietrantonio started off the Ducks’ second half by making a good pair of free-throws, giving the Ducks a 7-point lead (36-29). The Ducks and Aggies traded baskets here and there for the rest of the second half, but ultimately, the Ducks’ lead was too much for the Aggies to overcome.

With a minute and 8 seconds left in the game, the Ducks were up by 20 points (74-54), and it was all but over at that point. After a three-pointer by freshman Jacob Krantz with 20 seconds left in the game, the Aggies’ fate was sealed — victory for the Ducks.

The Ducks ended up defeating the Aggies 77-54. Cook scored 23 points in this game — a new personal record for him. Cook was also named the MAC Freedom Men’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week (again), bringing him up to a total of two Player of the Weeks this season. The fact that the Ducks were ahead of the Aggies for almost the entire game shows how formidable the Ducks are. Other teams better watch out, because once the Ducks get on a roll, there is no stopping them.
