Mulling over Mueller

As the Robert Mueller obsession swept the nation over the last two years, I always remained ambivalent. While many believed that the Mueller Report would be the silver bullet that would bring down President Trump, you couldn’t convince me. Call me a pessimist, but I never believed that the systems of power controlled by the Executive Branch would indict a sitting president. Furthermore, I never believed that President Trump actually colluded with Russia. Did he commit campaign finance violations? Probably. Did he attempt to obstruct justice plenty of times via Twitter? Absolutely. Has he committed more fraud and crime in his career as a real estate developer than we could all possibly conceive? Positively. But I don’t believe he colluded with Russia to steal an election. From what we’ve seen from the Mueller investigation so far, plenty of his lackeys absolutely tried to collude with Russia, but Trump himself did not.

On March 24, 2019, I was proven to be correct. Attorney General William Barr published his summary of the submitted Mueller Report in which he claimed that the report exonerated Trump of collusion charges and did not reach a conclusion on obstruction of justice. Twitter lit ablaze as Trump supporters did a glorious victory dance for many days, for the libs had finally and truly been owned! Of course, a reasonable counterargument arose, seeing as the Barr letter literally states that the report did NOT exonerate Trump on charges of obstruction of justice. To be completely honest, I don’t even trust Barr’s interpretation of the report. Many congressional Democrats agree, and have been pushing for a release of the full, unredacted report.

Honestly, I don’t even believe that the full, unredacted report would take Trump down. If the unredacted report did contain damning secrets that Barr failed to cite in his letter, I’m not sure if Trump would be removed from office. In my opinion, the Mueller obsession always seemed like a cop-out for people on the left. Robert Mueller and William Barr, two lifelong Republicans, were never going to buck centuries of government precedent to arrest a sitting President. There’s only one thing we can do to defeat Trump in 2020: Run a candidate that can beat him. For me, that’s Bernie. For you, it may be someone else. But the important thing is to actually get involved with a candidate who you feel represents your views, and vote for them. Waiting for someone else to solve our problems for us isn’t productive, we need to actually take part in our democracy. If Trump really does go down for obstruction of justice, I’ll make sure to publish a column and apologize for ever doubting Mueller. However, if you think the system has failed us, don’t sit around and wait for the system to fix itself. In the meantime, I’m going to volunteer for the causes I’m passionate about, and donate to politicians who best represent my interests to help change that system.
