Crowning a King in Spring

It is finally nice outside on campus. Spring is here, birds are chirping, Frisbees are being thrown, and smiles are more present. This also means more events are happening here at Stevens. First, we had CPAC, and I’m sure everyone had an interesting experience with that. Fraternities and sororities are holding their formals and taking pictures up on Castle Point. Boken is coming up soon, and this year’s theme of Nickelodeon should be an amazing one. However, there’s one event that I am looking forward to the most. Indeed, this might be the most excited I have ever been here at Stevens.

I am talking about CPK, Castle Point King. This event is held annually by the lovely sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you must be living under a rock (or a freshman). Fraternities compete against each other by creating a short movie, an on-stage talent, performing a choreographed dance, and dressing to the nines all for the glory of being crowned Castle Point King. All the proceeds from the event this year will be donated to Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, two very deserving organizations.

Other than Intramural Greek Football, this is the biggest competition between Greeks on campus. If you read this column regularly, you may know I am a big fan of competition. I think it drives us to do our best and fuels innovation. I’ve been here for five years and was part of a CPK act back in the day. I’ve seen what wins and what crashes and burns. Therefore, I decided back in February that this is the time for me to compete in the annual event. By the time you read this, it will be about 24 hours until I shine on-stage as the Knight of Alpha Sigma Phi.

Some of you may not know this, but I have an extensive performing arts background. I performed in my first musical in first grade, and from then until my senior year in high school, I performed in at least one musical and/or play a year. I even attended performing arts camps funded by stars such as Britney Spears (she’s so sweet) and 50 Cent (he’s shorter than you think. Sorry Fiddy). The performing bug didn’t end for me at Stevens either. I was heavily involved in the Stevens Choir almost every semester and took part in a few Off Center shows. Some would even say listening to me on WCPR’s Chicken, Waffles and Gravy or the webcasts for Stevens Athletics is an art form.

To say I feel confident about CPK is an understatement. I’ve been working with my team diligently these past few weeks, and they are amazing. They have been very receptive to the idea and theme, and were quick to pick everything up. It’s going to be a lot of fun on and off stage Saturday night, so I hope to see many of your faces in the crowd. Just remember, as a wise man once said, “Life moves pretty fast; if you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” #SaveIan
