Go out for a drink

Alcohol is something that has been talked about in my life since I was a young boy. In fifth grade, we had a local police officer tell us about the dangers of drugs and alcohol in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, program. In my sophomore year, I took driver’s education classes and my teacher would always joke that “the legal BAC limit for you to operate a vehicle is zero!” Even as an RA, I have had to complete the alcoholEDU courses these past two years.

As this year goes on, I find myself wanting to go out more and more. This semester, I have been to a party or gone to a restaurant and order a beer with my meal more than other semesters. After a long week of classes and work, I just want to relax with my friends, drink a beer, and socialize. I have even mentioned to my colleagues that once Tuesday hits, you just cannot wait for the weekend. They all share this same sentiment and I don’t blame them.

Senior year can be stressful, so it is good to have outlets of entertainment and diversion. I have made it a point to schedule at least an hour out of my week to hang out with friends. Parties have taken up some of my Friday nights. This past Tuesday night, my senior design team and I traveled to Biergarten so we could get to know each other outside of the classroom.

The night started off with five of us meeting at the Howe center waiting for the shuttle. One of my friends told us that the gray line stopped running for the night, so we opted for calling a car through Uber. As Sebastian, our Uber driver, rolled up to campus, we realized that it was going to be a tight squeeze in his car. Our taller teammate decided to ride shotgun and the other four, including myself, got incredibly cozy in the backseat.

We arrived at Biergarten a few minutes later and ordered a few beers and food from the grill. A few members stated that this was their first time going to Biergarten. As an aside, going to Biergarten is a graduation requirement along with taking four PE classes. There was a group next to us that was playing Heads-up, a great party game that is incredibly easy to pick up. We decided to download it ourselves and have a ball with it. As we drank our lagers and IPAs, we yelled out lyrics to Destiny’s Child, lines from “Juno,” and other ridiculous things.

Seniors, we are incredibly lucky to live in a town with an incredibly high density of bars. Take advantage of this fact while we are still here in Hoboken. However, you still need to graduate, so don’t go overboard, or at least wait until 100 days or the day before graduation. Remember, all work and no play makes Atilla a dull duck.
