Knitting club comes up with 1,000 ways to dye

Hayden lounge was filled with aprons, gloves, needles, yarn, and lots of dye! Stevens students came to dye their yarn exotic colors and make yarn of multiple colored patterns. Some students attempted to inject dye into the core of the yarn ball while others dipped their entire ball of yarn into pools of dye. All of this happened on Tuesday, November 11 at the Stevens’ Knitting Club’s “1,000 Ways to Dye” event.

Tables were filled with red, orange, blue, purple, and green. Experimentation continued as students tried different combinations of colors and yarn. “This event really stimulates creativity since students can custom make their own yarn,” said Vice President Kyra Pastore.

Participants shared what they would knit using their unique yarn. Some wished to make socks while others were interested in making hats and scarves. People were coming in and out of the kitchen, heating up their yarn in order to set the dye and then cooling it with water.

“This was a great event,” said freshman Connor Harrigan, “I’m new to knitting club and this was a great way for me to get started.”

Participants were learning as the event went on: “My first yarn didn’t come out right since the dye didn’t penetrate into the ball,” explained junior Geraldine Mabagos, “But my second one came out much better. You just need to soak the yarn into the dye for a really long time,” she continued, holding a beautiful turquoise ball of yarn in her hands.

Other students chose creative combinations of colors. One tried to make a yarn ball colored red, white, and blue while another dyed her yarn orange and red to resemble a flame.

“[The] Knitting Club is really happy with the turnout,” remarked Treasurer Matthew Hall. “More people should come to meetings,” began President Gillian Koch, “We can show people how to knit the yarn they worked so hard to dye.”

As excitement and chatter filled the room, students took home three to four balls of custom dyed yarn, leaving with plans to return to knit them into whatever their minds can think of.
