Stevens crowns its Castle Point King of 2014

The annual Castle Point King (CPK) was back this year and livelier than ever! Starting at 6:00 p.m. on a beautiful Saturday evening in April 12, 2014; Castle Point King entertained and astounded all students who came to watch in the Canavan Arena. Hosted by Stevens’ very own sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon, Castle Point King not only entertained and crowned the king of Castle Point, but recognized graduating Seniors from Delta Phi Epsilon and served a good cause. All of the proceeds from Castle Point King went to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation. ANAD is a non-profit organization that serves to provide help and support to anyone suffering from an eating disorder. ANAD also strives to prevent eating disorders through education and uses some of their funding to research the cause and treatments of eating disorders.

To anyone on campus unfamiliar with CPK, it is a male beauty pageant and talent show in which contestants perform to compete for the coveted title of Castle Point King. Each contestant is a man chosen to represent their fraternity and is tasked to put on a show abiding by the given theme. Contestants devote a lot of their time to creating their show, costume, and short video clip; which will essentially determine if they win the competition or not. All in all, CPK is a huge, campus-wide event that attracts many students yearly.

This year’s theme for CPK was “what constitutes a hero and how can each of us individually be a hero?” Throughout the show, it was clear that different contestants and their groups had different meanings for what constitutes a hero. The costumes of each contestant were unique and some people chose to stick to pop culture with choosing a superhero, while others created their own superhero.

CPK started off with an opening dance by the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon and the Princes competing for Castle Point King. An introduction of Castle Point King 2014 was then given by hosts Lindsay Crossan and Nick Kirby, who were dressed up as Wonderwoman and Superman.

Anthony Grasso of Delta Tau Delta was the first superhero to perform. He dressed up as a transformer and performed a dance act incorporating songs like “I can transform ya” from Chris Brown. The dance entertained the audience and the brothers of Delta Tau Delta heavily cheered Grasso on.

Next up was Valentino Ivezaj of Phi Sigma Kappa who dressed up as Quailman, since all the good superhero names were taken. Phi Sigma Kappa put together a dance act with Quailman, Patti Mayonnaise (the girl whom Quailman hoped to impress), and the sisters of DPhiE. In the spotlight, Ivezaj wowed the audience with his singing voice.

Felix Zhang of Alpha Phi Omega took the spotlight next. Zhang kept his klutzy nature intact in his video depicting his training (which involved going to engineering school and learning classes like fluid mechanics and thermodynamics) to become the Avatar; who can bend earth, water, fire, and wind. His dance act told a story as he sought to avenge his master’s death, before deciding to forgive and accept the course of life.

James Coyle of Sigma Nu, drew the audience in and charmed the girls. As Austin Powers, he effortlessly pulled off a lot of groovy moves and slide dancing during his show as he and his sexy sidekick traveled down to the basement of the Howe Center to take down the villain residing there.

Paul Pavlich of Kappa Sigma grew up with the country life and decided to put on a show depicting him as Redneck Man. His short video displaying his adjustment to city life provoked a lot of laughs and his dance act, which contained a lot more pop than country music, entertained the audience.

After Pavlich’s performance and an intermission dance by the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon, Bayindir Citak of Alpha Sigma Phi stepped onto the stage. Citak went as a superhuman who wanted to help the environment and care for Earth; thus, he became Captain Planet. Unlike most acts, Citak’s involved no dancing. Instead, Citak sang a song that the brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi created. The song described how everyone is a hero in their way and invoked some feels in the audience as everyone clapped to the song.

Kevin Marti of Nu Alpha Phi dressed up as a Power Ranger and did a dance with several other brothers of Nu Alpha Phi dressed up as Power Rangers. What stood out the most was Nu Alpha Phi’s video; which included a lot of crazy animations and film manipulations. This involved scenes cut from the Power Rangers TV show and an animation of a giant monster destroying Hoboken.

Jeff Nicholls of Sigma Phi Epsilon dressed up as Batman and put on a very elaborate dance act that involved the Joker and Bane. In addition, to the delight of the audience, Batman managed to get ahold of the Hoboken Batman and the video clip ended with them arguing and yelling “I’m Batman!” at each other. Batman’s dance act was split into two parts, in which the second part utilized an extra screen used to create silhouettes and add special effects as “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence played. The audience remained captivated by the performance.

Last, but not least, Nick DiPrimo from The Lodge performed. In the clip, DiPrimo religiously practiced the rituals of GTL (gym, tan, and laundry) and accidentally used contaminated hair gel that turns him into a super-evolved human. DiPrimo Dude (his superhero name) continues to religiously practice GTL and gets hit by a truck. After the clip, brothers from The Lodge assembled a band to play “My Hero” from Foo Fighters.

After all the performances, shout-outs were given to each of the graduating Seniors of Delta Phi Epsilon. Each Senior was dressed formally and was escorted by a Prince. After all the Seniors of Delta Phi Epsilon went up, a speech was given about ANAD by Lindsay Crossan and Nick Kirby; who both had been changing costumes throughout the entire show. Raffles were then given to the audience.

The Final Four of the competition were announced soon after: Paul Pavlich (Redneck Man), Jeff Nicholls (Batman), James Coyle (Austin Powers), and Kevin Marti (Power Rangers). They  were asked questions that required each to remain in character. One of the questions asked was, “Your girlfriend is Wonderwoman. What do you do?” Coyle responded, “I fly back to the ’60s man!”

The Final Four then left the stage and Quackapella stepped in to the spotlight to entertain the audience while the judges decided who was going to be Castle Point King 2014. Quackapella performed “Pompeii” by Bastille and a Daft Punk mash-up; which involved using their voices for all the singing and sound effects. Quackapella’s performance impressed the audience and was very well received.

At long last, the moment everyone had been waiting for: Who was crowned Castle Point King? Well, the runner-ups were Anthony Grasso (Transformer), who was crowned Prince of DPhiE; Kevin Marti (Power Ranger), who was crowned Prince of People; Tino Ivezaj (Quailman), who was crowned Prince of Talent; and James Goyle (Austin Powers), who came in second place and was crowned Prince of Smiles.

The crown of Castle Point King 2014 was given to Jeff Nicholls (Batman), Prince of Sigma Phi Epsilon for the amount of effort and creativity put into his performance.
