Graduate student found dead in Jersey City

It is a sad week for the Stevens community as it mourns the loss of a member of its family. In an email to faculty, students, and staff on Wednesday afternoon, Stevens officials announced that Yuyang Zhuo, a graduate student, was found dead in Jersey City around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11.

In a Jersey Journal article from Wednesday, Jersey City police spokesman Bob McHugh stated that Yuyang Zhuo fell to his death from the 26th floor of an apartment building in the Newport area of Jersey City.

“Police, working with investigators from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office have determined the death is not suspicious,” McHugh said in the article.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Zhuo, 22, had work experience in the technology industry, serving as Computer System Manager at Yellow River Co., Ltd. and as Software Engineer Trainee at Bleum.

Zhuo studied at Xidian University in Shaanxi, China, receiving his Bachelor’s of Engineering in Network Engineering in 2013. He was currently in his first year of graduate study at Stevens and would have received his master’s in computer science in 2015.

Marybeth Murphy, University Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, announced the news to the Stevens community.

“Any death within the Stevens extended family is a great loss.  It is particularly painful to lose a student.  We recognize the difficulty of this moment and have prepared a series of opportunities for those who would like to come together to share their feelings or speak to a counselor,” Murphy said in the email.

Stevens administration expressed their condolences to Zhuo’s family after the discovery on Wednesday.
