The No.14 Stevens Field Hockey team defeated William Paterson University 8-0 on Wednesday, September 23, at home in Hoboken, improving to 5-2 on the season. Stevens controlled the game throughout all four quarters, recording 40 shots while holding William Paterson without a shot.
Starting off at 1:15 into the game, senior Sophia Cozza opened the scoring. The Ducks doubled their advantage in just over three minutes when senior Jenna Piantieri scored at 4:46 off an assist from Cozza. Junior Ava Pelletier added another goal 49 seconds later, assisted by freshman Jenna Mayer, giving Stevens a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Ducks continued their offensive pressure in the second quarter. Freshman Alana Clifford pushed the advantage to four at 21:35, converting off an assist from freshman Emma Trout, followed by Mayer’s goal at 26:35. Stevens entered halftime with a 5-0 advantage after recording 30 shots and 14 penalty corners in the first half.
Senior Taylor Brooks opened the scoring in the fourth quarter at 47:06. Pelletier then scored her second goal of the game just over two minutes later, assisted by sophomore Julia Katz, bringing the final score to 8-0.
Pelletier led Stevens with two goals on five shots, all of which were on target. Cozza finished with three points, recording a goal and an assist, while Mayer also recorded a goal and an assist.
Stevens’ defense held William Paterson without a shot or penalty corner for the entire game. Junior goalkeepers Natalie Ward and Julianna O’Sheal, senior Maria Dante, and freshman Maggie Hilden each played one quarter in goal as the Ducks combined for the shutout.
The victory marked Stevens’ fifth win of the season. The Ducks are scheduled to return against Kings College on October 3 in Pennsylvania!
