The Victorian Language of Flowers was used for decades to relay feelings that people had a hard time expressing or were too embarrassed to share. Each flower has its own meaning, and each color further explains the emotions they imitate. The flower we will be looking at today is the Beargrass. With a long, sturdy stem, this flower can reach anywhere from two to six feet. The blooms are concentrated at the top of the plant, with each blossom having six white petals and stamens. It was thought to be a good luck charm when gambling, seeking employment, and when having general difficulties. In the Victorian Language of Flowers, the Beargrass symbolizes new beginnings and rebirth.
Welcome back, everyone! As you all know, it is the start of a new semester! Which also means it’s a time for new beginnings! Last semester, I remember being intimidated by all the changes, but now on my third round of it, I feel ready to take on the challenges of a new semester! Here is what I personally advise for the start of a new semester!
Get yourself organized! Whether it be on a sheet of paper, on a tablet, or in Google Calendar, each semester brings a new schedule with new locations, classes, and professors, so it’s important to know what section you are in and so on and so forth. Organize your room in a way that aids your schedule. If you’re prone to crawling back in bed for a nap, face your desk in a different direction so you don’t see it when working! Lend yourself to a rebirth of productivity!
Welcome the change! If you’re an incoming freshman student, transfer student, or just adjusting from the adventures of your summer, it is important to recognize that change will happen, even if it’s not how we’d prefer it. One of the best ways to cope with an ever-changing world is to recognize the differences in your life and find a new way to work with it. For instance, if you have a new roommate who likes music as they sleep, maybe you ask them to use headphones or keep it low. Start the beginning of the semester as relaxed as you can and go with the flow!
Work with a routine! It’s important to start working on a routine now because it will be harder to implement better habits when the stress of the end of the semester arrives. For example, if you are trying to use the gym more, carve out a spot in your schedule for it now and make it part of your habit. That way, you’ll know what times are for studying and what times are for doing things you enjoy. A new routine can mean getting ahead of a brilliant semester.
Last but not least, remember to give yourself grace. After all, it can take a minute to regulate yourself to the hustle and bustle of school. In the start, have fun and enjoy the nice weather, but remember to stay on top of your work before it gets too overwhelming. If none of this has served you well, then maybe find some beargrass and keep it in your pocket — it just might bring you luck in an unexpected way.
