As I am writing, it is currently 80 degrees in Hoboken, and that means I can’t wear sweatpants and hoodies anymore, which is tragic. With that in mind, I thought I should share some of the summer trends I have been seeing both from working in retail and what I see online.
My worst nightmare has come to fruition, and I like it: Culottes and capris are back into the lexicon of fashion. A 2000s staple that I used to hate— proportionally, I thought it didn’t work— has proven me a hypocrite. After I bought a pair of very long shorts that fell at my shins, my mind immediately changed — I was in love. Luckily, a bunch of retailers like Aritzia, Abercrombie, and Uniqlo have been capitalizing on this trend, and I have seen it best styled with a nice form-fitting top and a skinny pair of sneakers.
This leads into sneaker trends where long gone are the chunky sneakers — hiking shoes and skinny sneakers are in. Salomons are also here to stay, and I will be wearing mine, which I have had for over four years now. Other trends are the boat shoes of 2016, particularly Sperry, after Miu Miu showed them on the runway a couple of seasons ago. Sperry has recently collaborated with both Aritzia and Abercrombie, of which my coworker bought six pairs. Additionally, it seems that the general public has accepted sneakers like the Puma Speedcats and those types of sneakers, which will continue to prosper. Some shoes that I recommend are the Adidas Italia 70s, Adidas Ghost Sprint, Converse CTAS, and the Asics Hypersync.
One that I am wary of but like to see on other people is flip flops. I knew that this would happen after The Row released their $600 rubber flip flops last year, and it trickled into the Y2K aesthetic, and now all I can see all over my Instagram is flip flops and baggy pants to achieve this archive aesthetic. No, flip flops have never died, but in a fashion sense, it’s something that we will be seeing more often on people’s feet — not mine, though.
The final trend is Chanel. Fashion influencers, fashion critics, and everyone into design have been talking about Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel. It’s been selling out everywhere, and countless celebrities like Margot Robbie, Kylie Jenner, and Teyana Taylor have been seen wearing it, and the numbers are showing. I am not saying you have to buy Chanel, but if you want to see inspiration, Chanel is a good place to look at.
In summary, these have been the summer trends that I have been seeing and thought I would share, even though some of these already started last summer, but will likely experience a return.
