Once you’ve wrapped up your review, the big question rolls in: Do I stay with this company, or start looking elsewhere?
Whether you loved your co-op or found it just okay, this is your moment to think strategically. Do you want to build on what you started here? Or is it time for a fresh challenge?
It’s not an easy decision by any means — or at least from my experiences — but I found a checklist of questions that can help you come to a conclusion best for you, easily!
1. How to Ask About Staying On
Timing is everything. If you’re interested in staying part-time during the semester or full-time over the summer, ask during your review or schedule a quick follow-up.
Try something like: “I’ve really enjoyed working here and feel like I’ve grown a lot. I’d love to continue contributing if there are any opportunities to stay on part-time or continue into the summer— would that be something we could explore?”
Be clear about your availability and interest. Companies appreciate initiative but also honesty about your schedule and limits.
2. Reasons to Stay
- You like the team and culture
- You’re learning and growing
- There’s potential for a future return or full-time offer
- You’re already trained — no onboarding stress!
3. Reasons to Move On
- You want experience in a different field or company size
- The work isn’t aligned with your long-term goals
- You’ve plateaued and need a new challenge
- You just didn’t vibe with the team — and that’s okay!
4. Plan B: The Next Internship
If staying isn’t an option, that’s your cue to pivot. Update your resume with this co-op experience, reach out to your network, and use the skills you’ve learned to show up stronger in the next round of applications.
