On October 2, sophomore Lily Wierzbicki earned Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Defensive Player of the Week honors. This is Wierzbicki’s first career weekly award, coming out of Stevens’ game versus Albright College with five saves and a shutout win. The shutout win marks the Ducks’ fourth on the season.
Speaking of shutout wins, Stevens Field Hockey kicked off conference play with a 4-0 win and continue to ride their longest winning streak of the season, now at six games. With their win against King’s College this past Saturday, Stevens remains undefeated at home this season and added a fifth shutout win to their record. The Ducks also celebrated senior day, honoring Dani Hessels, Paulina Georgoutsos, Amanda Murnick, Julia Zatyko, Lynda Fairnella, and Mackenzy Garden.
Stevens dominated the game from start to finish, with their first goal coming from first-year Sophia Cozza. Cozza scored her third goal of the season off of a penalty corner on an assist from junior Mackenna Quigley. The Ducks’ second goal also came from a first-year with one second left in the second quarter, when Jess Kopernick scored on a rebound off a shot from Fairnella.
The third quarter received the most action from the Ducks. Only minutes into the third, junior Alisyn Fink scored her second goal of the season, and with only three seconds remaining, Fairnella scored her sixth goal of the season on an assist from first-year Kylee Scherer. This made the score 4-0 and was Scherer’s first career assist. Between the posts,Murnick made her first career start and earned a win.
Stevens was back in action on Wednesday, October 11 as the Ducks hosted their pride game against Misericordia. The Ducks are 3-1 all-time against the Cougars, including winning the last three meetings. Field Hockey will also play tomorrow, October 14 against Lebanon Valley College at 6 p.m. in Annville, PA.
