Anyone who has worked at Stevens has had to deal with the struggle of logging hours and making sure they get their pay check at the end of the week. Although this has been a struggle, Stevens Payroll and the Office of Finance have been working to make getting your pay check settled as easy as possible.
As of now, paychecks are delivered to the designated office of whichever department they work for. This, of course, is not true for those who have direct deposit. Direct deposit is a much more convenient process. With direct deposit, your pay is automatically deposited to a bank account that you specify. In order to have direct deposit, a student must have an account associated with a U.S. bank, and then must submit a form to the Office of Finance (See list of banks in Hoboken at the bottom).
The Office of Finance held a drawing for all students enrolled in direct deposit by February 27, as well as a separate drawing for faculty and staff. The winner, Graduate Student Tixiao Shan, received a pair of Beats headphones for his use of direct deposit.
In the past, paper time cards were used to record working hours. A few years ago, Stevens switched to DuckTime in order to consolidate and organize the tracking of hours and pay. Unfortunately its backend, KRONOS, has some flaws. It will only load properly through Java 7, which means updated versions of Java will not work. “It is so slow,” says student Felix Zhang, “you can’t tell which jobs are which, and if you make a mistake it is temperamental and hard to fix.”  Starting in April, Stevens will be using the new Workday Human Capital Management System. “It will be so much better,” says Mary S. Wheeler, Assistant Vice President for Finance, the Office of Finance. She describes the system as “intuitive,” and much easier to handle than DuckTime.
Also changing will be the way paychecks are distributed. Students will no longer have to go to their work location to receive their paycheck. Instead, checks will be sent to their local address, such as their Stevens mailbox. For the first bi-weekly pay in early April, Finance and Payroll will be staffing a location to distribute paychecks and verify the local address so that subsequent paychecks will be received timely. Announcements regarding when and where to pick up the first April paycheck will be made soon. Direct deposit is the easiest option still, with Workday making it possible to sign up for direct deposit straight through the system.
