City Council proposes prevention of rent increases

Hoboken continues helping its residents and small businesses. The Hoboken Alliance has been updating its webpage with important information for small business on subjects related to the federal stimulus package and the New Jersey Economic Development Agency. Additionally, the Hoboken City Council has passed a proposal to prevent rent-controlled apartments from raising rent for the duration of the State of Emergency and two months after its ending. Residents are still required to pay their rent during the crisis, however.

Mayor Bhalla announced that the city has been awarded $640,000 for its
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which awards federal funding to various non-profits and organizations serving low and moderate income families and populations. This additional funding, according to the mayor, will help the city rebuild and get through this crisis.

As another Hoboken resident passes away, the mayor’s update continues to stress the importance of social distancing, and would like to continue to inform all residents of the importance of staying in self-quarantine. 23 new cases were reported today, bringing the city’s total to 152 cases. The mayor continues to ask for donations of PPE devices, while the nation remains in short supply.
