The time has come again — the biggest award show in any movie lover’s life has come again. Luckily for us, so has the misrepresentation of who makes movies in the nominees. This issue, notably brought up in 2015, has come again five years after #oscarssowhite became a trend, but it just goes to show the age-old story of discrimination in the movie industry.
Despite many movies this year highlighting minorities, such as Booksmart (starring two female leads, as well as being directed by a female) and Us (Jordan Peele’s sophomore horror film), the majority of the films highlighted in the Oscars do not represent the full extent of the talent in Hollywood. Of course, there are a few notable exceptions that are nominated, such as Parasite and Little Women, but still, the lack of diversity is concerning.
This is most notable in the Best Actors categories and Best Director category. The Best Director category is particularly concerning, as only men were nominated for the award, and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women was nominated for Best Picture, but she was not nominated as its director.
Maybe the problem is who is in The Academy, or who Hollywood considers leading character material. Until these are changed, there will not be great diversity within the nominees. As shown, a strive for diversity does not work. Five years isn’t enough, but maybe in the coming years, The Oscars will be #sodiverse.
