The Stevens women’s volleyball team continued its beautiful first season in the MAC Freedom Tuesday, clinching the regular season title and remaining undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-18) sweep of Eastern University inside Canavan Arena.
Stevens dominated the opening set from the start, winning the first seven points and took a commanding 15-1 lead. The Ducks kept pushing Eastern and they took the first set 25-7.
The second set was more tightly contested as each team traded leads and took advantage of each other’s mistakes. When losing 17-16, the Ducks dug their webbed feet into the ground and took seven consecutive points. Eastern attempted to claw their way back into the match, but could not cut the deficit and dropped the set 25-20.
In the third set, Stevens had the win at the tips of their fingers. A tie game at 17, the Ducks showed what it means to truly fly high. Eight fantastic points out of the last nine were scored by Stevens to knock off Eastern and claim the MAC Freedom title. A huge win for all involved as the volleyball season nears its end.
In the match, Stevens was led offensively by freshman Allie Morton and senior Shelby Stewart. The pair combined produced 23 kills. Sophomore Elizabeth Chu led the way with 18 digs and just one receiving error. Chu’s fellow sophomore, Kathleen Reigner, finished the day with 34 assists and 9 digs. The Ducks dominated almost every statistical category and were just unstoppable.
With the win, Stevens has now won five straight games. Also, this win guarantees them seven consecutive regular season conference titles. Additionally, the Ducks move to 14-11 overall this season and 6-0 in MAC Freedom competition.
The Ducks will now have home-court advantage throughout the MAC Freedom Championship tournament. They have a 9-3 record at home this season. As a result, winning this MAC Freedom title is huge for a Ducks team that has been thriving at home.
