Having six straight away games prior to their match against Wilkes, the men’s soccer team has not had the best luck. They started the season 5-0-0 (wins-losses ties), but after the away stretch, their record sat at 6-3-2. Then, on October 12, their first game back in Hoboken, they took on Wilkes University.
The Ducks came ready and prepared to take on Wilkes. Having a total of 23 shots, Stevens was firing on all cylinders. Having goal-scoring depth, four different Ducks scored goals for Stevens in the 4-0 victory.
To set the tone, sophomore Sean Masur scored Stevens’ first, while juniors Stephen Johnson and Kevin Brito also scored early in the first half as the Ducks built a 3-0 lead.
Masur scored as he rebounded his own headed shot back into the net. This opened the scoring for the Ducks as they were en route to a productive first half. Freshman Bruno Andino had two assists on the day that solidified Stevens’ lead. He provided his first on a nice cross to junior Cristiano Hocken, who directed Andino’s pass to Stephen Johnson. Johnson sent it flying into the back of the net and gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Kevin Brito crossed the ball, and it was mishandled by the Wilkes keeper and the ball went in the goal. This concluded the Ducks’ onslaught in the first half as they went up 3-0.
In the second half, the Ducks were able to shut down Wilkes and get one last goal. For Andino’s second assist of the day, he played the ball into the box, where sophomore Mason Boenning collected his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute.
The Ducks totaled four goals for the first time this season. With this win, Stevens’ winless skid ends at five games, and it propels the Ducks to 7-3-2 on the year. It was an important conference win and a perfect homecoming.
