At Widener University on October 5, the Stevens women’s swimming team opened their 2019-20 season with a 145-116 win over Widener.
Stevens notched a score of 145 and was relatively dominant, but Widener was able to keep the meet close throughout. Widener won the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and the 100-yard backstroke as they fell in their first match of the season.
Alternatively, the Ducks looked strong in almost all aspects.
After Widener opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, senior Isabella Fairman helped the Ducks respond by winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a final time of 10:52 (minute:second). Later in the day, she also achieved 56 seconds in the 100-yard free and swam a 2:15 in the 200-yard individual medley to grab victories in each event.
Junior Isabelle Rivera achieved three wins. She won in the 50-yard backstroke, winning the event in a time of 28 seconds. She also swam first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and butterfly with times of 25 seconds and 26 seconds, respectively.
In her first ever collegiate meet, freshman Emma Beaney was also fantastic in the pool for the Ducks. She opened her career with a win in the 50-yard breaststroke at 33 seconds. She followed it up with a 1:11 in the 100-yard breaststroke to grab her second career win later in the meet.
Sophomore Madison DeJong also won an event for the Ducks in the pool, swimming a 5:29 in the 500-yard freestyle to win first place points.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Ducks performed swimmingly. Rivera, DeJong, Fairman, and senior Samantha Zdesar touched the wall with a time of 1:43 to win the event by nearly five seconds.
Cruising with many first place finishes, the Ducks were able to conquer Widener. They waddled their way to a 1-0 record and have their eyes set on much more this swimming season.
