On Tuesday, October 11, Lambda Upsilon Lambda (LUL), Latin American Association (LAA), and Black Student Union (BSU) co-hosted Domino Night in Hayden Lounge. Dominoes are a very popular pastime in the Caribbean and Spanish-speaking Caribbean countries, so in conjunction with Steven’s first Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, the three organizations worked together to celebrate culture through food, friends, and fun times. “We encompassed foods and music from the Caribbean to expose students to a culture they may have never been exposed to before,” said LUL President Jose Angeles. “Since I knew that some people outside that culture may not be as familiar with the game, I reached out to LAA and BSU to make an event centered around this game,” he said.
At the event, mayoral candidate Michael DeFusco was a special guest. Stevens’ own Vanessa Falco is running for councilwoman, so she invited him to speak at the beginning of the event to encourage students to register to vote. After his opening remarks, it was domino time. “Stevens students want more events like this where you can learn something meaningful or learn about a different culture in a fun way. We had many people ask us when the next Domino Night will be which leads me to believe they enjoyed the event,” said Angeles. “From the feedback I have received, this event will happen again and I hope to make it bigger. This definitely is not the first and last Domino Night; it is only the beginning.”
