3 new runways for Spring 2017

Traditionally, fashion week is a semi-annual event where designers give a sneak preview of what they will be offering next season for buyers and the press. Nowadays, with the shows so open to the public, many designers offer ready to wear styles for the current season too, which means there is more to cover! Spring’s New York Fashion Week just ended with the official dates being Feb 9-16, and Milan and London’s shows are still happening. Since I’m feeling the warm weather lately, I want to talk about the three new Spring 2017 runway trends before we move onto pre-fall.
A brand I’m less familiar with is actually what caught my eye first. Thakoon’s preppy pattern play for Spring is everything I love. The best look? A pink and white chiffon floral top over a black and white, vertical-striped mini skirt with a tan trench coat. Even better, the trench had small pattern details near the cuff and breast. The rest of the collection continues to boast this tried and true pattern combo of stripes and florals while also throwing in some other cute, unique details, including a lace collar button down and a scallop-hemmed sweater. I’m definitely keeping Thakoon on my radar.
If you liked my last article about the statement sleeve, Burberry is what you want to see. Deconstructed shirts and sweaters, extra long sleeves… this collection plays with form and structure in a fun way. I especially love the diagonal-hem sweaters and the extra-long cuffed shirts that peek out from the jackets and sweaters layered on top. There was also a sheer, black floral lace dress topped over vertical stripes for a really fun pattern combo. There were also male models on this runway decked out in nautical stripes, long wool car coats, and high-waisted trousers. Overall there were tons of lace, ruffles and balloon sleeves, as well as a neutral gray, white, and black palette.
Tommy Hilfigher’s new Spring runway didn’t blow me away like usual, but I will mention the repeat of striped patterns. His version is big and bold in saturated reds, navy, and yellow. There was also quite a bit of shine in the collection, not the least of which belonged to a pair of shimmering pastel blue, leather trousers! The overall theme was Americana with a western touch in the form of fringe, large belt buckles and cut-off denim. There were also some cool twists on the classic jean including vertical stripes in varying denim washes and patches everywhere.
While these collections were new to February, they repeat many of the style trends that were forecasted in fall for the upcoming warmer months. Bold stripes, florals, statement sleeves, deconstructed shirts and denim, and lace and ruffles everywhere! These are the trends to look for when padding your spring wardrobe this season.
I also want to give a throwback moment to Gucci’s Spring 2017 runway back in September. If you want to look at “fun” runway fashion, Gucci never disappoints. It’s hard to pick one thing to focus on in this collection, what with the bright orange, zebra overcoat, the 6-layer, multi-color tinsel one-piece, the giant walking red loofa, and a midi skirt that at least 10 disco-balls were killed for… there’s something for everyone, or maybe no one! While some of it may seem off putting at first, Gucci is a great place to look for inspiration if you feel like you need something crazy to kick start the creative gears!
