What do professors do when they aren’t teaching?

Students are usually only exposed to the teaching side of their professors. What they know is whether their professors are harsh graders, assign a lot of homework, or explain concepts well. However, just like everyone else, professors have interests and hobbies they enjoy outside of work. To learn more about this side of our professors, I had the chance to speak with Dr. Jennifer McBryan and Dr. Daniela R. P. Weiner about how they spend their free time and what they enjoy doing beyond the classroom.

Dr. McBryan, who works as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, is loved by her students. She is known for helping students build their academic writing skills, her passion for teaching, and her engaging lectures. Apart from her professional life, she enjoys spending time with loved ones, including her son and close friends. One of her favorite things to do is read. She also shared that she loves going on hikes and cooking. These activities give her a chance to spend time doing things she enjoys outside of her responsibilities at work. Students might be surprised to learn that even with her busy schedule, she still finds time to pursue her various hobbies and spend time with the people closest to her.

Dr. Weiner, Teaching Assistant Professor in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, is a historian who specializes in modern European history, modern Jewish history, and the Holocaust. She also teaches several courses at Stevens. Dr. Weiner is well-liked by her students and valued for the connections she builds with them. Although her work keeps her busy, she has interests that allow her to take a break from her daily responsibilities. When she is not on campus, she enjoys trying out new and “fancy” coffee shops around Hoboken. She also likes going on walks with a coffee in hand. For her, getting outside and exploring the area is one way to enjoy her free time.

Similar to Dr. McBryan, Dr. Weiner has a busy schedule, especially with her two-year-old son. When she has the chance, she likes to go to the gym and exercise. Another interesting fact about Dr. Weiner is that she grew up around the New Jersey and New York area. She appreciates being able to work near the place where she grew up and enjoys spending time in the area. After a busy day, one way she recharges is by being outdoors. She loves taking in the fresh air while walking along the water, giving herself time to relax away from her responsibilities.

Although Dr. McBryan and Dr. Weiner have different interests, both show how professors balance their professional and personal lives. Between spending time with family, exploring Hoboken, reading, cooking, and exercising, they find ways to make time for themselves despite their busy schedules. Learning about their interests gives students a different perspective on their professors. Beyond teaching and helping students succeed, professors have their own lives, interests, and responsibilities that make them who they are outside the classroom. It’s important to know there is more to professors than what we see in class.
