Women’s tennis recent wins lead the Ducks to MAC Championships

The Women’s Tennis team has had an extremely successful season so far, with their overall record of 15-2 and an undefeated conference record of 6-0. The Ducks’ most recent victories came from matches against SUNY New Paltz, Lebanon Valley College, and DeSales University.

On Saturday, April 18, the team faced SUNY New Paltz, earning a 7-0 win and bringing the team to nine straight wins. The Ducks won two of three doubles flights, with sophomore Gigi Arenas and senior Stephanie Untermeyer winning 6-0, and junior Alix Dry and first-year Kaylee Hobbick winning  6-4. The Ducks won all six singles matches, with Arenas winning 6-1, 6-2; Dry and sophomore Wei-Wei Lai each winning 6-3, 6-2; junior Lorena Piegas winning 6-3, 6-3; Untermeyer winning 7-5, 6-4; and Hobbick winning two of three sets (6-4 and 1-0). 

On Sunday, April 26, Stevens defeated Lebanon Valley College, winning 6-1, clinching the No.1 seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Tournament. In doubles play, Untermeyer and Arenas, along with Dry and Hobbick, won their respective matches 6-0, while Lai and Piegas won their match 6-2. In singles matches, Dry added a 6-0, 6-1 win as first singles, as well as wins being contributed to from Piegas (6-1, 6-1), Untermeyer (6-4, 6-0), Hobbick (6-1, 6-0), and Lai (6-2, 3-6, 1-0). 

Following such an impressive win, the Ducks faced fourth-seeded DeSales University in the MAC Freedom Semifinals on Tuesday, April 28, winning 4-0. In doubles matches, Dry and Hobbick won 6-0, and Arenas and Untermeyer won 6-1. In singles matches, both Hobbick and Arenas each won their matches at 6-0, 6-0 for each set. Untermeyer delivered the match-winning point, winning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. This victory marked the Ducks’ ninth consecutive conference tournament match, counting both semifinals and finals appearances, since the 2021-22 season. 

Stevens will play again in the MAC Freedom Championship on Saturday, May 2, where they will face Lebanon Valley College once again.
