Exit strategy: Five tips for Move-Out Day

Move-Out Day is imminent for students living on campus. Unless you’re staying for research, summer classes, or an internship, it’s time to pack up. With residence halls closing at 6 p.m. on May 16, or within 24 hours of your final exam, planning ahead is key to avoiding the panic of a last-minute scramble. Here are five tips to help you get a handle on the chaos.

Tip #1: Take Stock
Before you reach for packing tape, you need to know what you’re dealing with. After a year on campus, things accumulate. Most people underestimate how much they’ve managed to cram into a dorm room. Taking inventory helps avoid last-minute surprises and gives you a clearer idea of how to pack efficiently. Jotting things down in your notes app and categorizing items helps visualize everything.

Tip #2: Downsize & Donate
Spring cleaning season is here. If you have clothes or accessories that no longer fit your style or needs, consider donating them or recycling them. With limited trunk space, unnecessary items are just clutter. There are plenty of options for donating, the best of which were previously highlighted here on The Stute just last week. Don’t waste money and energy packing things you’ll just throw away later.

Tip #3: Winter Wrap-Up
The bulkiest items should be your first target. The more puffers, boots, and heavy duvets you can box up and set aside now, the better. They are the hardest items to cram into luggage at the last minute. Even better if you can send them home now to lessen the work needed later on.

Tip #4: Consider Vacuum-Sealing
Vacuum-sealing bulkier items is an easy way to save a ton of space. By removing the air from linens or piles of folded clothes, you can work with a much more manageable, compressed stack. All you need is an appropriate vacuum bag and a standard vacuum hose. If you don’t own one, reach out to friends; odds are, someone has one tucked away and won’t mind lending it out for 20 minutes.

Tip #5: Pack a Bag
Packing a separate backpack with vital electronics, chargers, basic toiletries, and a change of clothes is a great way to avoid unnecessary stress. The last thing you want to be doing, on top of saying goodbye, is tearing open boxes or undoing your hard work because you need a charger or set of keys.

Packing up is never easy, but starting early turns a mountain into a molehill. Don’t forget to sign up for a move-out time through the housing portal and complete your checkout form to avoid extra fees. Good luck with finals, and enjoy the well-earned summer break!
