Stevens expands the foreign language program with new courses and foreign language cultural events.
The program comes with new courses that will satisfy general elective requirements. Students will be able to put their knowledge learned from the classes directly into practice in the real world. The Department of Foreign Languages, directed by Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) professor Zachary Balog, continues to update its course offerings as students equipped with new language skills will be more marketable and extend their future career choices. Students will also be exposed to music, food, and entertainment from different cultures within the curriculum.
The program currently offers courses in three languages: Chinese, French, and Spanish. Spanish has the deepest course lineup with four levels ranging from Spanish 1 (LSP 101) to Spanish 4 (LSP 202). French is also the same, ranging from French 1 (LFR 101) to French 4 (LFR 202). Chinese so far only has one course with Chinese 1 (LCH 101), with more Chinese courses to come.
These courses will be available to take as a general elective, free elective, or open credit for all students. But they will not count towards mandatory HASS courses for any major.
Beyond the courses, the program is also offering new cultural events: foreign language salons will host weekly meetings with cultural presentations and language practice for Spanish and French, a foreign film series that runs monthly, and cultural cuisine lunches at Pierce Dining Hall to extend the foreign customs. The program will also participate in International Education Month in partnership with the Office of International Programs.
