It’s that time of year again. All that homework is piling up and it seems that every class has an exam, group project, or worse, both that need to be completed. As tempting as it is to take the best nap of your life on a twin XL bed or focus on anything else in your room but your assignments, you know that you need to study in a less distracting environment. Luckily, there are plenty of study spots on campus and in the Hoboken area for you to visit.
On Campus
The Samuel C. Williams Library offers plenty of different study locations. The first floor, conveniently where the drop-in tutoring center is located, provides rows upon rows of tables. While it may be a little noisy, it’s the perfect place to meet up with group project members and get some work done. The second floor is a little bit quieter and has study rooms available for students to reserve. If you would prefer to work in complete silence, the third floor is the best option. It is completely silent and has numerous desks and tables available to work at.
Another great option is the UCC skybridge. The fourth floor of the skybridge has multiple tables and seating options where students can study while enjoying the view. There are also study lounges available which have TVs and whiteboards for students to utilize. The dining area of the UCC also has tables available and a great view.
Other study spots on campus are academic buildings, such as Gateway North and Gateway South, or even the various eateries on campus. Spots like the Cannon Café have outdoor seating which is definitely good to take advantage of while the weather is still pleasant. Pierce Dining Hall can also be a great place to study, especially early in the day or later in the night when less people are around.
In Hoboken
Throughout the city, there are plenty of places to stop by to study. For instance, there is the Hoboken Public Library, which has lots of tables around and an outdoor reading area. The lower level of the library also has pre-owned books donated by Hoboken residents available for purchase. If you need to print something, the Hoboken Public Library also has mobile printing available.
Hoboken also has no shortage of coffee shops — the perfect place to hang out while also grabbing coffee and a snack. Jefferson’s Coffee, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Empire Coffee & Tea, and bwè kafe are popular examples. There are also other benefits to studying at a coffee shop. According to a group of researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, “the optimal study session has a moderate level of ambient noise of 70 decibels.” A bustling coffee shop has this sound level, making it a good place to focus and get work done.
There are various other establishments in Hoboken that can serve as a place to study. Panera recently started allowing customers to dine in again, making it a great place to sit down and study while sipping a charged lemonade. Other places like Kung Fu Tea or Chipotle also have seating and table options for customers.
In the end, it’s up to you to decide what works best for you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to study at your dorm or apartment, but there are also other places on campus and in the Hoboken area to check out!
