On Sunday, February 5, the men’s and women’s fencing teams held their annual senior day matches at Canavan Arena. The men’s team competed in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) Group B Round Robin. The women’s team competed in a pair of duals making up the Stevens Invitational.
The men’s team ended the day with a 3-1 record, including wins against Hunter College (26-1), Army (17-10), and Yeshiva University (27-0) and a loss against New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) (13-14).
Of the three different groups, the sabre group ended with the most individual wins at 31. Graduate student Matthew Jacobson contributed a team record of eight wins. Fifth-year Vaughn Rice had six, while junior Christopher Stone and first-year David Ryder Bidwell each had five wins. Sophomore John Morreale added three wins, and sophomore Colin Mahoney and senior Dylan Woodward each had two wins.
The épée group collected a total of 28 individual wins. Senior Patrick Pan, sophomore Nicholas Smith, and first-years Sean Crann, Matthew Kemenosh, Yash Yagnik, and Andrew Yurovchak each contributed three wins. Additionally, graduate student Wolfe Crouse, fifth-year Andy Faubert, senior James Morris, and junior Caleb Romero each had two wins. Senior Jack Corridon and junior Erik Marran each added one win apiece.
The foil group ended the day with 24 individual wins. Senior Andrew Bauman and sophomore Thomas Cheng each finished with five wins. Sophomore Evan Peneiras and first-year Aden Vishnevsky each added four wins, and first-year Nick Reznick added three. Sophomore Rocco Mathews had two wins, and first-year James Glover contributed one win to round out the wins for the foil group.
Additionally, six team members were honored in recognition of senior day: Bauman, Corridon, Crouse, Faubert, Jacobson, and Rice.
The women’s team ended the day with a 1-1 record, including a 19-8 win against Army and a close loss to NJIT (11-16).
The foil group finished with an impressive 13-5 record. Senior Ashley McDermott and first-year Emily Zgombic each contributed four wins, while sophomore Elizabeth MacDonald followed close behind with three wins. Senior Brianna Ellis and sophomore Annabelle Crescenzo each added one win apiece.
The épée group finished with nine individual wins. Seniors Claire McNeill had four wins, and Keira Mizzi added three more. Junior Victoria Beke contributed two wins.
The sabre group ended the day with eight individual wins. Junior Alana Schmitt had four wins, while sophomores Alyssa Ip and Nerissa Lundquist each added two wins apiece.
Additionally, five seniors were honored in recognition of senior day: Zoe Casten, Ellis, McDermott, McNeill, and Mizzi.
After a day of strong competition, assistant coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch reflected that “It was a great day fencing Army and having a really competitive match with NJIT. All in all, it was a good day, especially for our seniors, who were able to have a home event in front of their friends and family.”
