Among the many dining venues available at Stevens, Colonel John’s is especially beloved for its diverse selection of Latin American food and burger options from Sono and Grill Nation, respectively. But over the spring break, Colonel John’s underwent renovations that would mark the beginning of its conversion from a dining facility to a set of two new classrooms situated within Howe Center. The work involved the “abatement of asbestos-containing materials in piping insulation above the ceiling in Colonel John’s,” according to an announcement by the Division of Facilities and Campus Operations.
“Stevens has always planned to close Colonel John’s with the opening of the new University Center,” said Project Manager Dominick Strumolo. “The space on the first floor of the Howe Center can now be used for other institutional needs.”
With an influx of new students waiting to take up residence in the University Center Complex (UCC) Residential Towers, future classes are expected to be more packed than ever before.
“Classrooms are always in great demand at Stevens and [these new classrooms] allow us to be more flexible with course scheduling,” Strumolo explained. “The closure of Colonel John’s allows for additional classrooms to be created in that space.”
Although Colonel John’s will close, Stevens’ residents won’t miss its signature meals for long. The new University Center’s dining marketplace is expected to offer all of the same menu items currently available at Colonel John’s, in addition to certain new, unique venues.
“There are two new dining venues in the UCC–the Marketplace, which will have a variety of stations offering a broad range of menu options, and the Cannon Café, which will offer coffee, smoothies, and a small convenience store,” said Strumolo.
