It is officially official, spring has sprung. Although it felt like the dreary, cold weather of winter overstayed its welcome in the Northeast, alas spring is finally here. As COVID-19 restrictions are perhaps the most lenient they have been since pre-pandemic times, people are eager to get back outside. The ease in restrictions comes just in time for the rise in temperatures. Following the loungewear and basics that took the market by storm during strict lockdown conditions, people are now more inclined to dress with bold, statement-making pieces. These ideologies, whether subconscious or intentional, are ultimately what drive the anticipated trends for the spring (and even summer) season.
While many people have been focused on elaborating on their wardrobes in neutral, versatile ways, color is coming back in style. Color can be versatile as well, and this spring I imagine we will see people experimenting with incorporating pops of color into their outfits. It is usual for color to make its appearances in the warmer months of the year, especially spring when nature is in bloom. However, now more than ever, people are looking for bright and bold pieces to add happiness and positivity to the world. Colors that are especially popular today and will continue to thrive in the coming months include greens, yellows, and pinks.
On the same page of standing out in the age of a post-pandemic world, bold and brave prints are playing a similar role as bright, statement colors. In many ways, these two trends are working hand in hand. Each is having a similar impact on the spring trends. In combination with the popular Y2K (Year 2000) fashion trends some people are sporting as of lately, the statement prints we see in stores today are another outlet of standing out and being bold after spending much of the last two years in sweats.
We may have Euphoria star Alexa Demie’s character, Maddy, to blame for the rise in matching sets this season since they were her signature piece in both seasons of the show; either way, I am certainly not complaining. Whether it’s baggy sweats and sweatshirt set, a tighter-fitting pant with a cropped hoodie, a biker short with a match sports bra, or a loose short with a coordinating button-up shirt…matching sets are IN. I am here for it! I love a good matching set just as much as the next gal. Not only are they stylish, but they are easy. Not to mention the monochromatic outfit trend that continues to live on. So, the groutfit (all gray outfit) I used to make fun of my dad for wearing is now quite literally a ‘go-to’ lounge look of mine. Now that brands are designing seamless matching sets for closets, sporting monochrome fits will be easier than ever.
Another trend that I expect to emerge this season and into the summer months is long baggy shorts on girls. As we advance further into the twenty-first century, we dive deeper into trends from the past. As a child, I remember wearing Bermuda shorts, which were long jean shorts that hugged your leg tight all the way to right above the knee. While I am still not far enough away from that part of my life to comfortably repeat that trend, I am hoping to score the perfect pair of vintage fit high rise mid-thigh shorts that hug at my hips but get straight and almost baggy around my thighs. I think longer shorts are becoming more in-style than the tiny shorts our generation may be used to.
These are the trends I am expecting to see this season, among others. The change in season and change in temperatures are always reasons to switch up our wardrobes. This year though, the major lift of COVID-19 restrictions is likely to affect our pieces in more ways than you would imagine. Most importantly, standing out amongst our peers seems to be our top shopping priority this season.
