As you may have noticed in the past couple of weeks, River Street has been bustling with construction due to the River Street Tree Planting Project. The project started on February 28 and will continue until April 22. According to Richard Snyder, the Senior Project Manager, as of now, the project is on schedule to finish on time.
Previously, the sideways were cracked and uneven and some of the trees were diseased and damaged, which prompted this new construction. In an email interview with The Stute, Snyder stated that “Over the past few years, there have been a series of projects to improve the River Street streetscape, including McLean Plaza, the Babbio Center and Burchard Hall sidewalk replacements and the repaving of River Street. This project is a continuation of that work.” The project is currently being completed by Nordic Contracting and Almstead Tree Care, under the supervision of Facilities Management.
According to the email sent by Stevens about the project, 18 new trees are going to be planted along River Street. The trees that are being planted are American Hornbeam and Hackberry. In addition to making campus look more aesthetic, the trees were picked because they are disease-resistant, native to the area, and good for urban environments like Hoboken. Furthermore, according to Snyder, more bike racks will also be installed along River Street to promote the use of bikes on campus. While work is being done on campus, “be sure to follow all posted signage and safety directions for walking along River Street. All bicycles should be removed from the EAS and Burchard bike racks before this time,” according to an announcement by Stevens.
