On January 7, 2022, Stevens administration announced a “temporary, remote instruction for the period of January 18-30th” for what was previously anticipated to be a fully in-person semester. This decision was largely impacted by the rapid spread of COVID-19’s Omicron variant. To date, COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have surpassed 75 million cases and 890 thousand deaths; a significant number of these cases can be attributed to the Omicron strain.
With the delay, residential students were expected to move in between Thursday, January 27 and Sunday, January 30. Students were instructed to make appointments via myStevens to schedule their move-in time. However, due to a snowstorm that hit the northeast on Saturday, January 29, Catherine McGuire, Manager of Residential and Dining Services, sent an email announcement that dDue to the inclement weather, anyone who has not arrived should make arrangements to arrive on Sunday, January 30th and will be accommodated.”
Upon arrival, residential students were additionally required to take COVID-19 home tests that were left in rooms. McGuire indicated, “if you test positive, we ask that you leave campus to quarantine at home for 5 days and notify Student Health Services.”
Stevens resumed in-person classes on January 31, 2022, and plans to continue hosting students on campus for the remainder of the semester. In regard to COVID-19 policies, Stevens has required all eligible students and employees to submit documentation of a booster vaccination. Additionally, masks have been mandated in all indoor and public spaces on campus, and surgical masks are available at a number of campus buildings.
