The weather is finally warming up and we all know what that means for this Jersey boy. Whenever I’m not working (or avoiding the things I should be doing), you can find me outside enjoying this beautiful weather. Now, those of you not from New Jersey may look at me as if I have four heads. It’s only been in the mid-60s all week. That’s not really warm, lounge out in the sun and tan type of weather. And to a degree you’re right. But I can finally go out for a walk, go exercise, or just find a nice sunny spot and read for a while. Doing these things gives me the best feeling in the world right now. Even if only for an hour, I feel happy to be out and about.
So why do I care so much about the weather? Couldn’t I do those things later on anyway? It’s probably because I was locked inside this time last year, stuck on Zoom classes all day long. And by the time I got out of class and could enjoy how nice it was out, the sun had set and mosquitoes were out to give me a million and one bites. So last Spring wasn’t exactly a fun time. It was something that I missed the most about Hoboken. I could go anywhere, pass friends on the street or on campus, grab a cup of coffee with my brothers, or just chill down on the pier enjoying the view or reading (plus I didn’t have to worry about catching a stupid virus). There’s nothing quite like sitting down with a new book and my drink from Empire while random friends walk by me and say hi.
It was the little things that I missed the most. Yes, I missed all the big fun events that came with the end of the year, but those are rarely the moments we remember. The times I look back on all throughout Stevens are the late nights I spent up with friends when I should have been sleeping. Or even those random ventures into the city. Even the times I said enough is enough and dared to try something new and take a chance. Those are the moments that I live for. Let’s be honest, life is boring for the most part. We sit in class or work most of the day only to find more work to do just when we think the day is done. But what makes life worth living are those little unplanned moments.
I know you’re reading this on your laptop or cell phone right now (R.I.P. the print edition for the rest of the semester) so finish this up and maybe a couple of other articles and go! Take this chance to get outside and set the spontaneous events in motion that you will look back on years from now. Take the opportunity to try something new or take a risk. I can almost promise you’ll thank me later. And with that said, it’s time for me to go back out and soak up what little is left of this nice sunny day and the few months I have left in the mile-square city.
