On February 18, 2021, the new MakerCenter was launched at Stevens, After organized preparation since the Fall 2020 semester, the MakerCenter is available for use to all faculty, researchers, and students at Stevens, regardless of major or area of study.
Jean Zu, Dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science (SES), sent out an email to all SES students that announced the launch of the MakerCenter. The SES MakerCenter page was also released on the Stevens website, which details all aspects of the new facilities and services that the MakerCenter has to offer.
The MakerCenter provides hands-on experience to students and researchers, as they are able to design and produce ideas they conceptualize. Its goal is to foster collaboration and creation while offering multiple facilities and services throughout the Stevens campus. Bookings and reservations are required to gain access to most of these spaces.
One of the facilities of the MakerCenter is the MakerSpace, which is located in Room 104 of the ABS Engineering Center. Provided equipment includes worktables, tools, fasteners, laser cutting and engraving technology, and a soldering station.
The Prototype Object Fabrication (ProOF) Lab is another space offered by the MakerCenter. Its main focus is on 3D printing and it can be found in Room 139 of Gateway South Hall.
In the Burchard Building, Babbio Center, and Williams Library, there are Quantum Space facilities that are meant to introduce students to equipment and techniques involved with quantum technology. The Burchard Building features the Quantum Learning Space, which includes equipment for linear optics, nonlinear optics, photon counting, and lithium niobate nanophotonic circuits. In the Babbio Center is the Quantum Informatics Lab, which is centered around applying quantum technology to presented data. Finally, on the first floor of the library is the Quantum Corner where students are able to gain access to the next-generation Internet of Things.
The Machine Shop, Electronics Shop, and Welding Shop are all located on the 2nd floor of the Davidson Lab. The Machine Shop includes machining and fabrication services and equipment. The Electronics Shop provides all services involving electronics, including soldering tools and techniques. Welding and fabrication services are offered at the Welding Shop.
Each facility of the MakerCenter requires specific training and safety precautions. These spaces are open for use outside of class, provided that the proper measures have been taken to acquire access. However, when it comes to the availability of these facilities, first priority is designated to classes.
According to Dean Zu, another lab including chemistry and biology equipment will be added to the MakerCenter in the future. To learn more about the MakerCenter and to stay updated on its facilities and services, visit the website for more information.
